9. Ruby Sparks (15)

Dir: Jonathan Dayton and Valarie Faris
Cast: Paul Dano, Zoe Kazan, Chris Messina

I wanted to see this as soon as I saw the trailer and poster.  I just loved the concept of this guy writing about a woman and her coming to life.

So there you have it,  Calvin (Paul Dano) is a writer suffering from a block.  He has a dream about a woman, Ruby (Zoe Kazan, who also wrote the screenplay).  His therapist (played by Elliot Gould) advises him to just write whatever is in his head, even if its bad.  Calvin therefor writes about Ruby.  To his surprise he awakes the next morning to find she is real.  He naturally freaks out and confides in his brother Harry (Chris Messina), of course Harry is a bit wary of believing Calvin.  He goes to meet Ruby and figures out the only way to see if Ruby has just come to life through Calvin is to get Calvin to write things on his typewriter that Ruby just couldn't guess.  They try all sorts of different things, all becoming true.

SPOILERS!!!!!

After a while the novelty wears off and Calvin actually becomes sick of his perfect girl and, unintentionally makes her a depressive and then in an attempt to change that, manic.  This leads to a truly harrowing and dark scene when Calvin is trying to explain what has happened to a deeply confused Ruby.  This scene and the one that follows were both quite heartbreaking but needed.  Happily there is a nice ending which I think this film needed and deserved.

This has made the list for its originality and the way such a story line was handled.  Paul Dano is certainly a good actor (FYI when I first saws this it was a sort of Dano double night as just before this film I had seen Looper which just narrowly missed out on this list).  Zoe Kazan was also very good and has an awesome imagination.
